Record the contacting authority, responsible officer, case number, notification details, required attendance time and the individual's location. Preserve summonses, notices and existing documents and contact a lawyer promptly. Do not infer the offence or procedural stage from second-hand accounts alone.
What if the person does not understand the documents or language?
Tell the responsible officer which language the person uses and request interpretation and legal assistance. An arrested or detained person can request a private meeting and consultation with a lawyer, and the presence of a lawyer or trusted person during questioning. Before signing a statement, check the translation, the person's account and the document's purpose. Raise discrepancies promptly and request verification.
What will the lawyer do after becoming involved?
